Day 1: Computer Lab

So I've been thinking about not making copies of my classroom management plan (CMP) to save some trees and time in the copy room. So, what's my alternative?  Unless I bring the students into the lab, I can't really do anything about the CMP. I mean, I can't really assume that every kid has his/her own device.

I could bring the students to the computer lab.  How boring would that be? They just sit there and listen? Fat chance. They will just go online and do other things.  This won't work anyway because I was planning an interactive day when I go through the CMP. So that has to be day 2, along with the crossword puzzle.

Since I want to bring the students into the lab to fill out information forms, I started thinking what other activities I can have them do.

Then, I saw someone shared this link: http://www.vark-learn.com/english/page.asp?p=questionnaire. It is another survey to help people get an idea about what kind of learner they are, and also give them some ideas about study strategies. (Here's a paper version, if you can't go to the lab.)(Here's another web version. You can print it out and give to the kids.)

V=Visual
A=Aural
R=Reading/Writing
K=Kinesthetic

My score are V=6, A=6, R=10, K=9. So I am a multi-modal learner.
Here's an infographic on different types of learners: http://www.edudemic.com/2012/07/types-of-learning/

Since it's a good idea to know what kind of learner your students are, I think I am going to modify my form to include student results.

So, here's a rough sketch of day 1 for Chinese 1:
  1. Introduction
  2. Computer lab rules overview
  3. Students to lab:
    1. Take the VARK questionnaire
    2. Fill in results on Google form
    3. Create an Edmodo account
    4. Complete Edmodo profile
    5. Join Chinese 1 class group
    6. Locate the link for CMP
  4. Return to classroom
  5. Distribute Crossword Puzzles as homework
  6. Dismiss
Chinese 2 & 3 can work the same way, but since students have already created an Edmodo account, that part can be omitted. Most of them also know the CMP, so maybe I don't need to spend so much time on it, and they can just work on the Crossword Puzzle in class.

Sounds like a plan for now.

So, what kind of learner are you? Do you know?
